Johannes Brahms
Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77

The fifth concert of the season is imbued with feminine energy. The orchestra has invited the star New Zealand conductor Gemma New, who will present the Czech premiere of Overture No. 2 by the 19th-century French composer Louise Farrenc. Given the social classification and the limited women's rights at the time, Farrenc was an extraordinary phenomenon. Not only did she manage to study composition in addition to the piano, taking private lessons with Antonín Rejcha, but she also succeeded in having her work, which includes three symphonies in addition to numerous chamber pieces, performed on international concert stages.

The solo part of Johannes Brahms' Violin Concerto will come to life thanks to the virtuosity of the world-renowned violinist Josef Špaček, a finalist of the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, among other accomplishments. Brahms originally wrote this masterpiece for one of the most significant violinists of all time, Joseph Joachim.

The excursion into the musical language of the 19th and early 20th centuries will conclude with the late Romantic Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Symphony No. 5, which premiered in Helsinki on the composer's 50th birthday and achieved incredible success, is famous primarily for its Finale.

The so-called "swan theme," which arose from observing the flight of sixteen swans, has literally become legendary. The composer described it in his diary as "one of the greatest experiences of my life."
