The friendship between Camille Saint-Saëns (1835–1921) and Franz Liszt (1811–1886) was one of the strongest. They knew each other for over 30 years and helped each other's careers considerably. In his correspondence, Liszt promoted Saint-Saëns as an accomplished musician and composer and was ultimately a major influence on Saint-Saëns's music, although the two maintained very different musical styles. The program for the eighth concert also features works by Claude Debussy, who stands on the other side; Saint-Saëns and Debussy were not in love with each other and their relationship was marked by mutual disrespect. Another composition to be heard tonight is Piano Quartet by Gabriel Fauré, a pupil of Camille Saint-Saëns.
